Fashion Hits & Misses of the 2014 VMA's

27/8/2014

A year since the infamous Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke performance - once again the VMA's are back and the fashion stakes were never higher.... (than Taylor Swift's hotpant-jumpsuit ensemble). This year there was no twerkathon by Miley or Taylor throwing shade at Harry Styles, but instead we had a MAJOR twerk session from Queen Nicki Minaj and an adorable Bey/Jay/Blue Ivy picture perfect moment. Being one of Hollywood's more undignified awards ceremonies, the VMA's are more about entertainment, and an excuse for the pop culture heavyweights to sport the most outlandish of get-ups; and this year the show did not fail to deliver.

Coming in top of the fashion stakes, and stealing most of the spotlight is Nicki Minaj. Over the past year or so, the entire world has watched Nicki's no less than fabulous make-under. Why didn't she do this earlier? I, personally can not get over how amazing she is looking lately, and her VMA outfit choices were some of her best to date. Miss Minaj kept classy yet casual on the red carpet, wearing a python print YSL minidress before going on to sport a second YSL minidress for her performance with Jessie J and Ariana Grande. Her third show stopping outfit of the night was at the after party -a hunter-green leather minidress with matching ankle boots.

A close second for me, are the outfits of the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Kim, Kendall and Kylie looked stunning as per, with Kim adorning an Aztec tribal print Balmain number. Although very low cut, paired with strappy black sandals, the ensemble was fun and adventurous - yet still attention grabbing and classy. Kim K is ever the fan of Balmain. The youngest members of the family, Kendall and Kylie, always seem to impress on the red carpet nowadays. Usually attired in black, but always sleek and sophisticated. Kendall, being the top model that she is, wore a Alon Livne top and pants, with simple but smart Guiseppe Zanotti shoes. Kylie wore a black satin floor length Alexandre Vauthier dress, featuring a thigh high slit, with a pair of Gucci shoes. I can't help but feel that Angelina Jolie started a craze for the infamous dress slit, showing a lot of leg.

Perhaps the most divisive sartorial choice of the evening came from Taylor Swift. She always grabs the attention, and everyone does seem to be talking about the pastel lace Mary Katrantzou Resort '15 playsuit. I'm not sure what I think of this - she does have killer pins but I can't help but think the playsuit needs to be extended.... even into a minidress? I think she's trying to tell us that she has grown up and is no longer a sugar-sweet country singer. (Just a side note that she was busting out those dance moves, yet again, this time during Queen Bey's performance - with her BFF Lorde).

Others who pulled out the stops were Chloe Grace Moretz, out-classing just about everyone there, in stunning Louis Vuitton. Lorde was also vamping it up as usual in Chanel and Iggy Azalea was looking "fancy" in a metallic Atelier Versace number. Rita Ora wore a red silk Donna Karan Atelier gown, again with a hip-high slit. Last but at no means least, how can we forget, the one and only Queen Bey and her beautiful family. Looking "flawless" as per in a black transparent Nicolas Jebran ensemble. See the pic below for the adorable picture of the Carter family - I just could not resist posting it!
